Along The Lavender Line Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Go Pack Go: I'm closing this one down as it is one of our furthest caches from home and is becoming difficult to maintain. Nice place for a cache though! GPG

The Lavender Line is part of the former Lewes to Uckfield Railway opened on 18th October 1858. Between 1859 and 1922 the line was operated by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway and passed into the ownership of the Southern Railway in 1923. In 1948 it then became part of the nationalised British Railways Southern Region.

In its heyday, the line saw extensive use by local, London, Brighton, Tunbridge Wells and Dover services. However, due to a combination of factors including the Beeching cuts and the unsafe bridges on the approach to Lewes, the line was closed on 22nd February 1969.

It is called the Lavender Line as the coal merchants which used to operate from Isfield Station yard were A.E. Lavender & Sons of Ringmer.

The Lavender Line is a working railway museum with many small artifacts being displayed in the former goods office which was built by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway in about 1860. Most small country stations were provided with such a building but this one, which was restored in 1995, is the only one that is known to have been restored and is open to the public. There are facilities there and it is well worth a visit. Charges apply and opening times vary throughout the year.

You do not need to visit the train station to log this cache.

Suggested parking is at N50 56.441 E000 04.795 which is not in Isfield. There is room for one or two cars here. Once parked, walk down the lane until you reach the footpath at N50 56.615 E000 04.707. From here you walk across the field and cross the Lavender Line track so be sure to take care.
