CACHE UPDATE: August 25,
2005
Cache had been moved about 8 feet from its original location,
don't know if this was an animal or Mother Nature.
It is back in its original location.
PLEASE replace it as securely as you find it (or better).
One stage container has been replaced by a more sturdy/drier
one.
This cache is located in High Point State Park in Sussex County,
NJ. Entry is from Route 23 North or South into the main gate. Take
the first right turn after you enter then look for parking at:
41’ 18.645N / 074’ 40.001W.
There is a fantastic panoramic view from the picnic table, a very
short walk down the trail from the parking area (150’ or so). While
this could be a lunchtime cache, the terrain and pest potential
would not be suggested in work attire.
To make this cache more interesting and less discoverable by
muggles,
PLEASE NOTE AND REMEMBER THE
FOLLOWING:
As geocachers, you will already know your degrees (latitude and
longitude - 41 for north, 74 for west) so
THESE ARE NOT USED ON THE COORDINATES YOU WILL FIND AT THE
STAGE(S) -
ONLY THE MINUTES AND DECIMALS ARE USED!
To make this even more interesting and more muggleproof,
the decimal is NOT included and
THE NUMBERS ARE WRITTEN RIGHT TO LEFT, NOT LEFT TO RIGHT AS
NORMALLY DONE!
North and West indicators are arrows;
imagine that you are looking at a compass: the arrow straight up is
North, the arrow pointing left is West.
For example: you find the following coordinates:
an arrow pointing up and the numbers “01234” next to it and under
it is an arrow pointing left with the numbers “56789”. These
transpose to 41’ 43.210N by 74’ 98.765W.
This cache has ??? (at least 2) stages. The first is
a small PVC container (similar in size to a film canister) which is
painted klizich flat black and has fishing line tied to it and
secured into it; it may be “reeled” up or retrieved by arm.
Subsequent stages utilize black plastic containers about the size
of 35 mm film canisters, all using the above format. The cache
container itself is a “unique” container generally used for
recycling; this one, however, is scaled down in size from the
original.
It is plastic and about half the size of a .30 caliber ammo box.
The top twists to open: counterclockwise to open, clockwise to
close; please double check before leaving that it is secure. A log
book and normal goodies, collected from other caches, are in it;
also enclosed a geocoin obtained at the “Bowling for Caches” event
cache. To complete the cache requires about 1/2 mile, give or take
a little. Please replace securely; as found or better...thanks!
High Point State Park abuts the Appalachian Trail and is in
rocky & thorny terrain, not all of them stable.
There are stickers and other plants starting to bloom. Please use
extreme caution when seeking this cache - it is in prime snake and
tick territory! N.J. has numerous snakes including 2 of the
poisonous variety: rattlesnakes and copperheads. Have fun but be
cautious. Bears and other animals are also native to the area.
Please have a whistle, bell or other noise making device to help
you remain safe. Enjoy.
