DVD exchange cache in the Tillamook State Forest. Somewhat hilly and slipperly, but a nice hike.
This cache is filled with a variety of really bad DVDs; please exchange them for bad DVDs that you have! They're 'bad' in the sense that Ebert would break out in a cold sweat if he came within three miles of these films, but one man's trash is another man's treasure... right? (And Mystery Science Theater 3000 is hillarious...) The original DVDs in the cache are: AMC Cult Classics: The Atomic Brain, The Brain that Wouldn't Die, Carnival of Souls, The Night Tide -- Mixed bag. Some creepy, some scary, but with four different movies, you're sure to find at least a couple of guffaws. Island of the Dead -- Moderately entertaining if terribly predictable. Plot about as deep as the coating on a Wal*Mart gold watch. Deceived -- Watch Judd Nelson's character struggle with a belief in God! Darkest Knight -- Clearly this can't be that bad, there's actually a Darkest Knight III! Reminiscent of BBC series with low budgets and bad special effects. Blankman -- Yes, Daman Wayans is a talented comedian, but like so many comics, being able to write a funny five minute skit doesn't imply being able to pull off a feature length movie. Better than some of the worst offenders in this category, though, such as It's Pat. Extreme Ops -- Good stunts, fun effects, no plot. Brotherhood III: Young Demons -- If you're prone to motion sickness, this isn't the DVD for you. Formula for making a bad movie: Start with about five pages of uninspired script. Film the fifteen minutes the script provides. Fill in another hour with lots of slowly bobbing camera shots of smoke filled hallways, repeating scenes when you can no longer afford additional footage. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians -- Free obnoxious song included; will stick in your head for about four years. Strikes us as possibly OK as a high school play where the 'colorful' costumes and sets are supposed to make up for the awful acting, but why it became a real movie is beyond us. The Prescence -- Kathy Ireland and some mutants. Seems like a pilot for a never-made TV series; intriguing premise where the plot asks many questions and doesn't really answer any of them. The Satanic Rites of Dracula -- Surprisingly, really not that bad. Actual recognizable actors appear in this movie. Expect to Die -- Tries to compare itself to the matrix; we wonder what the marketing guys were smoking? Both movies do have computers in them, but, uh... that's about where the similarities end. Free Fall -- We couldn't make it all the way through this one, and we've got pretty strong constitutions. Seems like someone took a Harlequin romance novel and decided that surely it would make a terrific DVD. Especially if it were filmed, uh... word for word. Getting to the cache: From highway 6, take Larch Mountain Road and immediately veer to the left after crossing the Wilson River. Take another left at a fork and park at N 45 36.677 W 123 26.049. From there, your goal is to get down to a creek that runs into the river; you'll be walking up this creek for awhile. At ~0.9 miles from the parking spot you'll come to a fork in the stream, and which point you're very close. The cache is a large ammo can. Other than the very last few tens of feet, no bushwhacking is required. You'll be hiking on old logging roads and will have to cross the occasional stream, duck under or climb over fallen logs, etc. There are some patches of stinging nettles... sorry - they like pretty areas near streams, too.
