Mule Ridge Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

MtnMike: Apparently this very remote site, which is visited rarely is not welcome.
The cache will be removed and moved, if it hasn't been muggled already.

Perhaps, I will move it to land that the new BLM trail, flagged and to be constructed (19 miles) will be a better location for this cache.

Geocache Description:

Mule Ridge - Another Mtn Adventure celebrating trails and vistas that make our northstate special.

Son Distopher wanted an epic ride and since he attends UCD where the biggest hill is an overpass, we had to do a hill and it had to be off road. Thanks to Kanaka pointing the way around private property so this could stay on BLM land.

As you climb to bag this cache imagine having to do this daily to attend school. The Machado family's four children did this in the late 1800's as they hiked from their home site at Go Bear Go! to the school in Centerville.

There are several ways to arrive at the cache:

Most direct past Go Bear Go!: Park at the crest of Mule Town Road where there is the large parking area. Go past "Bear" following the orange flags. You will meet a more defined trail and will go right until you find a place where another trail joins on the left N 40 32.175 W 122 31.359. Go east at this waypoint as this trail takes you to a seasonal creek crossing where the jeep trail, clearly marked on the maps, goes up the hill. This crossing is at N 40 32.229 W 122 31.264. From this point it is 1 mile up the road to the ridge. The cache is close to the ridge junction on a knoll.

Less Direct - get Princess Colombine first and continue to the trail where the route from Go Bear meets the ditch: Follow the directions to Princess Colombine first. Get on the ditch and once you get the cache, continue to the point described above where the trail joins from the left/east (Go Bear Go!). Follow the trail east to the creek crossing coordinates listed above and head up. On the way down, you can follow markers to Go Bear Go! (turn NW at N 40 32.228 W 122 31.368 and avoid retracing the ditch trail. It will put you a bit below your car on the hill but if you have the time, this could give you three or four caches for your day on the trail.

Mule Mountain via the Salt Creek Loop trail or the Mule Mountain Pass trail. At the pass, go up hill to Mule Mtn Salt Lick and over the top. This is a very popular bike, hike and horse area. You can get Mule Headed from the pass as well.

Salt Creek Loop trailhead on Mule Town Road: There is a clear path following a recent burn that can be found at N40 34.265 W122 31.514. It is 1300 vertical feet up to Mule Mountain and which we came down on bike, missing the new picnic table at the pass by about 1.5 miles. We had parked near Go Bear Go! and it was 2 miles back to the car on Mule Town Road. I would not suggest going up this as it is just a fire break but if you are coming off Mule Mountain and wanting to hit the Mule Mountain Pass, following this route, you will miss your destination and end up on Mule Town Road.

There is no need to do any hiking off trail.
