The cache should be an easy find, located a very short distance off Highway #522. During the winter, snowmobilers can access the cache site easily, using the Argyle Riders #507 trail.
This cache is located in the heart of the Loring Deer Yards. Famous during the summer for its lovely cottage country, this area, during the winter, is home to an estimated 10,000 white-tailed deer. With an area size of 500 square kilometres, the Loring Deer Yard is one of the largest wintering deer yards in Ontario. Each winter, triggered by an accumulation of 20 centimetres of snow, deer migrate, from their summer range, into this wintering yard. Some deer will travel a distance of nearly 100 kilometres, into this area, seeking refuge for the winter. The deer are attracted to the area for the winter shelter, found under the canopy of the towering hemlock forests of this region. Ground snow depths are reduced under these protective conifers, making travel throughout the winter less demanding on the deer. White-tail deer can be spotted throughout this region at any time of day and year, but the best opportunity for deer viewing would be late in the day, during the month of March. During the March school break, at 5:00p.m., we personally counted over 100 deer in a single field (located at N 45’ 54.505 W079’ 54.745). With the high density of deer in the area and the nature of deer being nocturnal, we urge all cachers, while traveling in the region, to be alert while driving.
