A cache in sight of Hirz Mountain Lookout. Forest service signs recommend 4WD, and the last steep bit is closed to vehicles.
Hirz Mountain is located at the end of a poorly marked road off of Gilman Road. Views can be tremendous, and the nearby lookout tower is perched high above Lake Shasta on a limestone promontory. Access is best with a high clearance vehicle, but I have enjoyed (?) the climb by bicycle several times. Conditions will close the road to traffic for months during winter.
Another theme cache. We have lots of forest service fire prevention items inside, Smokey TB, and a FTF geo pin. Enjoy the trip, but don't fall on the limestone. Hirz, don't it?
