Located in Moanalua Valley below the H-3 Summit Saddle cache. There are about 29 stream crossing to get to the trail leading to the cache
This cache is located along the trail to the H-3 Summit Saddle cache. You follow the same trail until you get to the last stream crossing. Instead of going up the ridge to the saddle turn right and listen for the flowing water. Follow the your GPS and flowing stream to the cache site.
Again, to get to the cache you enter Moanalua Valley. Follow the old carrage road for about 1 hour. At the following location take the trail down and across the stream:
N 21 23.228 W 157 50.932
Within 5 minutes max you should be at an old guageing station. Keep following the stream until you get to the last crossing to reach the H-3 Summit Saddle cache. Approx point is N 21 23.831 W 157 50.002. To get to the summit cache go straight up the ridge. To get to the Plane Crash turn right and follow the trail and ribbons and water to the coordinates listed at the top of the page.
The trail to the H-3 Summit Saddle Cache was cleared today April 3rd 2005 and is "wide" open from leaving the carrage road to the summit. Now is the time to do both caches before the rains come again and things begin to grow.
You can thank the trail clearing crew of the Hawaii Trail and Mountain Club for the work on clearing the trail to the summit.
Enjoy your outing :-) And remember the rating system is "wrong" for Hawai`i. This trail is in really great shape but there is no way you are going to push any kind of bike along it.
