Basic Description
This is a multicache all about hard detective work, rather than
a beautiful location or wonderful hike. Most of the waypoints and
clues are in a suburban area, and you will be able to drive
directly to most of these. Feel free to e-mail me if you want to
confirm your answers to the riddles or any of the other waypoints.
The cache is hidden on open ground to discourage people from trying
to find the cache before finding all the waypoints. Park in a
residential area when you go after it.
How to solve the Riddles
The answer to each riddle is a single word, never ending in 's'
or 'ness' or 'ing' or anything like that. For example, an answer
could be 'give', but not 'giving', 'given' or 'gives'. When you
have the answer, convert the word into its coded form using the
'Decryption Key' used to encrypt all geocaching hints on the
geocaching.com website. You're almost done. Now convert the code to
numbers. Each letter has a number starting at A = 1, B = 2, C = 3
and so on up to Z = 26. So 'give' equals TVIR = 20 + 22 + 9 + 18 =
a total of 69. The total of this is the number you need to solve
the final coordinates. (Remember, this is only an example.)
The Riddles
Riddle number one:
"What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?"
Riddle number two:
"It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt
It lies behind stars and under hills
And empty holes it fills
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter."
Riddle number three:
"Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail, never clinking."
Riddle number four:
"This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron. bites steel;
Grinds hard stone to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down."
Find the following numbers
Note: There are no waypoint containers at any of the waypoints.
In all cases you only need to look to find the answer.
Number one:
Find these characters in the Bible. They are all found in one
sentence, but over two versus. They will give you two consecutive
numbers: Ekul, Samed, Suhcratsira, Kram and Sarhpape. Add the two
numbers together.
Number two:
Get the number from: S 25° 47.909' E 028° 14.204'. Clue: Not on a
wall.
Number three:
Use the symbol on the box at S 25° 48.696' E 028° 14.554 to get the
correct number. Clue: It's not spray painted on.
- Heart = 50
- Skull and Crossbones = 100
- Dog = 150
- Triangle = 200
Number four:
Use the white letter on the pavement at S 25° 48.622' E 028° 14.771
to get the correct number. There are numbers painted here aswell,
but you can ignore them. Please remember road saftey.
- A = 24
- B = 32
- C = 44
- D = 52
- E = 64
Interesting stop-offs
The following are some points of interest.
A boat in a garden: S 25° 48.790' E 028° 14.175'
An interesting wall: S 25° 48.279' E 028° 13.767'
Also, if your looking for a place to stop and figure out your
next move, there is the Monument Park shopping center at S 25°
48.095' E 028° 14.002' and the Waterkloof Ridge shopping center at
S 25° 48.858' E 028° 14.481'
Calculating the cache coordinates
The S coordinate is S 25° 48.x
x = 544 + (Riddle 1) - (Riddle 2) - (Number 1) - (Number 2)
- 3
The E coordinate is E028° 13.y
y = 555 + (Riddle 3) + (Riddle 4) + (Number 3) + (Number
4)
