On their way to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring, Frodo and
Sam passed through what would later become the Wharton State
Forest. The going was getting tough so they stashed some of
their swag to lighten their load. They did not have a GPS
with them to record the cache position. However they did have a
"true" compass given to them by Gandalf to help them find their way
on their quest. In the distance they could see two towers
whose locations were well known. (In modern times the NJ
Forest Fire Service would build lookout towers where these towers
once stood.) Frodo and Sam recorded the tower positions and
the bearings to the towers. With this information, can you
find the treasure? Good luck! |

After chatting with some of the first finders at the SJG CITO
the cause for the difference in the dead on calculations and the
ones that are off a few hundred feet became apparent. This leads to
a bit of helpful information for future cachers. Remember that in
Frodo's time, and perhaps in his mind still, that the Earth was
flat.
You should not have to climb any fire towers, ford any streams,
or go anywhere dangerous to find this cache. You can get pretty
close with 2WD if you drive carefully. Its also close to some of
the trails leading out of Batsto.
