The LOST Nation Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Keystone: Archiving to remove this from the list of caches. It sounds like a new and different multicache will appear in this park. That will be great! The Park should submit a separate cache page for that when ready.

Many colorful stories describe the naming of the river nearby. One refers to the chagrin early travelers my have felt thinking they had arrived at the Cuyahoga or Grand River instead of this one. Another story traces the name to a trading post operator named Saquin - lter changed to Chagrin by local people.

Archaeologist Charles Whittlesey found evidens of earthworks along the Chagrin River just downstream from this park. The site is named the Reeve Village site for the property's owner, Dr. George N. Reeve. People living here between 1250 and 1500 A.D., have been named the Whittlesey Culture after the archaeologist. During several excavations, a variety of articfacts were found including clay vessels, bird bone beads, projectile points, scrapers, and a large number of smoking or ceremonial pipes. These can now be seen at teh Indian Museum of Lake County at Lake Erie Colloege in Painesville.
More recently, this property was home to the Mahon Dude Ranch. In the early 1930s Doc McAlister, a local veterinarian, started a dude ranch and rented horses to visitors. In 1940 Bill and Catherine Mahon bought the ranch and continued operation of the horse livery. Mrs. Mahon sold the property to the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., but continued to live there until the 1970s. Some of the buildings were detroyed by fire, and others were razed because of vandalism before the property was purchased by Lake Metroparks in 1993.
Take some time to enjoy this park as it is becoming one of Lake Metroparks most visited. Enjoy the views and the expansion just across the walking bridge nearby the cache. Watch for muggles as you go be stealthy.
