Geocache Description:

Recommended Parking for this cache is N53.54.959 W000.47.028 which is the picnic site at Canal Head Pocklington. The walk to this cache is approx 1 1/4 miles which takes you past Silburn Lock Cache where you find another clue to the Pocklington Canal Multi-Cache.

The Pocklington Canal was opened in 1818 and is 9 1/2 miles in length, flowing from the foothills of the Yorkshire Wolds near Pocklington to East Cottingwith where it joins the River Derwent. The canal has nine locks, four attractive road bridges and eight swing bridges. The canal was last used commercially in 1934 and fell into disrepair but was saved from being a dump for sludge from a water treatment works by the Pocklington Canal Amenity Society which was formed in 1969. Six of the locks have been fully restored and seven of the original swing bridges have been reinstated. The four road bridges have been scheduled as Ancient Monuments and eight of the nine locks are Grade II listed structures. Along the length of the canal you can find various wildlife including swans and herons.

Please Remember that water is dangerous and keep an eye on young children at all times!!
