Geocache Description:

Located on Gragg Prong trail in the Wilson Creek area of Pisgah National Forest.

If you are up for a hike to see some spectacular falls, this cache is for you. My brother-in-law introduced me to this stream and we spent three days fly-fishing and camping in the area. The falls are fantastic - a few big drops and LOTS of cascades which provide plenty of deep pools for fishing (or swimming).

I highly recommend you pick up a map of the Wilson Creek area and spend some time in the woods. There are a number of different routes to get to the cache and the falls, but if you want simply a short day hike, the best place to park is at coords N36°01.894' W081°48.233'. This parking area is at the intersection of state roads 1511, 192, and 981. If you choose to get there from the Blue Ridge Parkway, it's a straight shot Southeast on state road 1511. All of these roads are dirt/gravel, so don't bring the Porshe! Even so, you should be able to get there with a smaller car - 4 wheel drive is not necessary, but is naturally helpful on gravel.

If you park at the coordinates listed above, you will have a moderate/strenuous hike (depending on your conditioning)about a mile in. To give you some idea, it was pretty easy for us (we're both 30 yrs), my brother-in-law (42 yrs), and his twin daughters (11 yrs) but we're all pretty regular backpackers. There are 3 wet crossings from the parking area, so bring some sandals!

The cache is located just above the falls right on the trail. No bushwhacking is necessary. As a marker, you will come across the stump of a large pine tree smack dab in the middle of the trail. Someone has carved what appears to be a tick-tack-toe grid on the top of the stump. The cache is hidden in a hole in the rock wall opposite the stump (about 2-3 paces north of the stump). It is a home-made contraption a little bigger than a film canister and placed in a zip-lock bag.

Enjoy your hunt, and enjoy the falls!

Note: My brother (local to the area) and I will maintain the cache as needed. Just let us know if it's needed between our visits.
