For a few years prior to the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, the major east-west route in the United States was the Turnpike Road which passed through New York State. It kept mainly to the ridge tops to avoid having to build bridges. There were toll booths on some of it and local residents helped to maintain the road in exchange for some of the tolls. Among the many state forests in Allegany County, the Turnpike State Forest is named for the old toll road. Much of the old road still exists and a portion of it passes through this state forest. The total area of the Turnpike State forest is 4744 acres.
This cache is placed in a tiny portion of the Turnpike State Forest which is cut off from the main section by a road, which is not the original turnpike.
Please limit your travel to the vicinity of the coordinates as private property borders this small parcel of
land. The cache is a small plastic jar. It contains a log book and some small trinkets for trading. Please return the container exactly as you found it.
