If this cache seems familiar to you that’s because this is the
second cache to be placed here. The original cache was placed by
pioneer geocachers HF John and Brother Larry on 6-1-03. They
decided to retire the cache on 2-29-04 after some issues with the
cache being wet and frozen. Then on 3-1-04 cacher ScouterMark
posted a note on the cache page that said:
“I hope you relocate this one instead of retiring
it, it's too nice of a location not to have a cache.”
I agree. I contacted HF John and with his blessing there is now
a new Cache at the 5 Arch Bridge.
Here is the description from the Historical Plaque at the
site:
The 5 arch bridge was built between 1856 and
1857 by the Genesee Valley Railroad to span the Conesus Lake
Outlet. The 200 ft. long x 12 ft. wide limestone bridge was part of
the Rochester - Avon - Geneseo - Mt. Morris line. Avon became a
railroad hub connecting Buffalo - Rochester - Corning - Hornell.
The line was electrified in 1907 with 13 runs daily between
Rochester and Mt. Morris. In 1941 the Avon - Mt. Morris section was
abandoned and the rail removed.
