Geocache Description:

The Blackburn and Over Darwen Tramways route opened in 1881 and was the first steam powered tramway in the country. Running between Darwen and Blackburn, it was electrified in 1900. Trams ran through Darwen until 1946 when the route was cut back to operate between Blackburn and the Darwen Boundary. This lasted only until 1949, when the final trams ran in Blackburn.

This cache will take you on a trip along the old tram route through Darwen, collecting clues from the few remaining artifacts on the way. You are welcome to walk or cycle along the route, though car is obviously quicker, and apart from finding sensible parking places it is just a case of following the A666 (a devil of a road?!) south. There are also frequent buses in the shape of Blackburn Transport's "Track 1" and Lancashire United's "Route 225".

We start our journey near the boundary between Blackburn and Darwen:

N53°43.019 W002°29.052 This replica cast iron box was installed in 199a

N53°42.154 W002°28.578 The old tram depot in Lorne Street. The street light on the pavement outside is number b.

N53°41.719 W002°28.045 Overhead wires were sometimes attached to buildings using roses (see picture). How many remain on the Nat West Bank building? c

N53°41.684 W002°28.039 Male and female waiting rooms. A plaque here celebrates the tramway - how many committee members are listed on it? d (exclude the Mayor and make sure you are looking at the correct plaque!)

N53°41.142 W002°27.718 How many roses on the Bowling Green Hotel opposite? e

The final micro cache, a 35mm film cannister, is located on the route at N53°(b+c)(b-c).(a+e)(c)(a+b) W002°(b)(a).(d/4)(c)(d/5) at one of the best preserved bits of tramway, and one that thousands pass each day probably without noticing.

Good luck!!
