Canal Cache Traditional Cache
Joannes Treats: Not only the cache, but the canal is in need of repair, and I have heard that there is another cache in the area. I am glad to get new people to the area. It is a treasure.

This is a truly unique area. I have always been amazed everytime I have travelled thru here. Right here in our little town of Hampton Bays, we have our very own Little Panama Canal. I put this cache here because I think everyone should experience what this place has to offer. Opened in 1892, the canal connects the Shinnecock Bay to the south, and the Peconic Bay to the North. Because of the 3 foot tide difference between the two bays, the tide gates were completed in 1919. The canal is 4700 feet long and the lock is 41 feet wide and 250 long. Anything that will fit is allowed to enter.
The cache is a film canister, with 4 silver quarters, a ring, and a bracelet. Please bring a pen/pencil to sign log. The hardest part of this cache is being stealthy, especially if the locks are closed and everyone is fishing, so I didn't add any clues. But you could also bring a pole and join the crowd to catch dinner, or just sit and watch life go by. I was even lucky enough the other evening while the locks were open to see a seal swim by. (Thats was a first for me) I hope you enjoy this place as much as I have throughout the years
