This is another easy to grab cache on the Backbone Trail. It is on that section of the Backbone Trail that follows the Mesa Peak Motorway between Corral Canyon Road and Malibu Canyon Road. This section of the trail follows the spine of a ridge and offers spectacular views both to the north and south.
I originally placed this cache over three years ago. It was a popular cache and many finds were logged. Due to the many finds, a very conspicuous, and now permanent geotrail leading to the cache location has been established. As a result, many muggles followed the trail and found the cache. A few months ago. Some of these muggles reported the cache as a "possible bomb" to the park rangers. The park rangers confiscated the cache. They returned my ammo box but asked me to use a different container. So, I have now placed a camo'ed tupperware container and placed the cache in a less conspicuous location. Happy caching!
The cache can be reached from the trailheads at either Malibu Canyon Road or Corral Canyon Road. The preferred parking is on Malibu Canyon Road at N34°04.794 W118°42.230. There is good trail all the way, no bushwhacking required. The cache is located only a few feet off the trail, near a very large boulder on the south side of the trail. On the side of the boulder facing the trail, there are many names and initials long ago carved into the rock. The most prominent name is “Richard”. Hence, the name of this cache. From this location you will have a spectacular view of Malibu Canyon Road 1,200 feet below and the blue Pacific about 3 miles in the distance. To the north. you will have a view of Brent’s Peak and Malibu Creek State Park. The cache container is a camo’ed Tupperware, placed on/near Richard’s Rock. As always, be very careful poking around in the rocks and bushes and always look carefully before reaching into these areas.
If you have the time, you can continue up the trail to toward Corral Canyon road (4.0 miles). There are several other along this route including GCM75F, GCC765, and GCC01D.
