St Thomas' Church (named for Thomas a Becket) is thought to have
originally been the hospice of Ramsey Abbey. The Abbey was founded
by Ailwine, a Saxon noble, in 969. The site chosen was then the
largest and finest of the islands of a great marsh formed by the
waters of the Ouse. It was afterwards connected with the mainland
by a causeway constructed by the monks. After the dissolution, the
abbey was given to Sir Oliver Cromwell (Uncle of the Lord
Protector). The title 'Baron de Ramsey' was created in 1887 and
bestowed upon Edward Fellowes. John Ailwyn Fellowes is the 4th
Baron de Ramsey.
