The 1.5 terrain rating given
refers to the path to the cache – if you decide to explore
beyond, the terrain is more tricky, with smaller paths,
hidden tree roots, etc.
Park in the car park close to Dunvant
Square (N51º 37.535, W004 º
01.893) – or, for anyone (like
myself!) who can’t drive, take the bus from Swansea City Centre to
Dunvant Square.
From the car park, walk along the cycle
path towards Gowerton (North East). About 0.2 miles along the path
is a bridge over the stream to the right – take this path, and
follow it around to the right: the path passes within ten feet of
the cache site. The area is popular with dog walkers, so please be
discreet.
Because of tree cover and the nearby
hills, GPS cover can be patchy, especially in the last 20ft or so
before the cache. Therefore please feel free to use the clue given
below.
Although the cache is located close to the
path, it is worth exploring a little further if you have time.
Dunvant, like much of South Wales, has a history of coal mining.
About 100m past the cache site is an old tunnel which was used to
transport carts through the hill. Around the cache area itself is
the remains of an old brickworks and a large pond.
A few warnings: the path can be a bit
muddy in the winter months. If you have children with you and
explore the woodland beyond, keep them close by at all times as
there are still remains of high walls and air vents from the
brickworks.
When we set the cache in Spring 2005, the
tunnel was open (see photo). However, it has since been closed off
as it is home to a bat colony. The brickworks are still accessible
though.
Note addded 22-11-2006: Thank you very much to Matrix, who
has offered to maintain this cache for us from now on - we are
moving away from Swansea.
