It was a warm spring day in the creekside neighborhood below the Woodglen Lake dam, but something was different… something sinister had made an unwelcome appearance. The great blue heron, spearing fish in the tailrace of the dam, saw it first. “Oh great, there goes the neighborhood,” he croaked. A mallard hen raising her new hatchlings saw it next. “Now children, be sure to stay far away from that!” she quacked softly. The adolescent squirrels challenged each other – “Go on, I dare you to touch it!” “I’m not gonna touch it, you do it first!”
As the days passed, the bottomland was all a-buzz with rumors. Things remained strangely quiet, didn’t they? How did this appear so quickly, without any warning or signs of activity? Had it been abandoned by its owners already? Was it even real? The one thing all the happy little woodland creatures could agree on was this – that thing sure was ugly!

Woodglen Lake Park is a small neighborhood park administered by the Fairfax County Parks Authority. Easy parking and access is available at either end of the dam from Fireside Ct. or John Ayers Dr. The area around the cache can be wet and muddy. There are abundant thorns, poison ivy, and poison oak, so dress appropriately and step carefully. Minimize your bushwhacking by following the stream. Please replace the cache carefully for the next finder’s enjoyment.
