Pino Gordo del Toril
Probablemente se trate del pino de mayor porte de toda la provincia de Albacete. He visto como hasta 4 personas juntas no conseguían abrazarlo.
Este formidable ejemplar de pino laricio se encuentra en un hermoso paraje, situado justo al final del Collado del Toril, y resguardado debajo de la cuerda de los Gallineros, la cual constituye la frontera natural entre los municipios de Paterna del Madera y Cañada de Provencio (Molinicos).
El cache se encuentra en las inmediaciones del Pino Gordo del Toril, en unas peñas en dirección NE. Para llegar alli, existen multiples opciones, dependiendo del tiempo que tengamos y según nuestras preferencias.
Siempre el último tramo lo realizaremos andando (o sobre animal de 4 patas) a través de un agradable y bien indicado sendero: AB-24, el cual historicamente unía Paterna del Madera con Cañada de Provencio.
Joaquín Muñoz Pozo, "El Penas", pastor, poeta y amante de Paterna del Madera y sus montes, se refiere a este sendero AB-24:
"Oigo el agua que me habita,
la luz cierta que soy
y que también hace a este valle."
Dado lo quebrado del terreno, es recomendable llevar buen calzado para protegernos de las torceduras de tobillos.
OPCIONES para acceder al caché:
1ª.-
Si queremos hacer una ruta de una mañana, recomiendo dejar el coche en el km 184 de la C-415 que va de Riopar a El Batan del Puerto ->(N 38º 32.691´ W 2º 22.956' a1296m).
Subiremos por el sendero AB-24 que justo cruza por allí, siguiendo el barranco del Toril siempre en dirección Cañada de Provencio. Desde este punto de inicio tardaremos unos 45 minutos en llegar al cache.
Si tenemos más tiempo, recomiendo una subida fácil al Pico del Gallinero ->(N 38º 31.688 W 2º 22.853' a1630m), desde donde disfrutaremos de una estupenda vista panorámica 360º de la Serranía del Segura a nuestro alrededor. Para subir al pico, volveremos hacia atrás unos 200m desde el Pino del Toril y tomaremos el camino que sale a la izda. justo entre dos señales. Subiremos fácilmente por senderos de roca quebrada que discurren por la ladera NW de la cuerda del Gallinero.
2ª.-
Otra interesante opción para BTTs es llegar pedaleando hasta el citado km184/C-415, pudiendo salir bien desde El Batan del Puerto (8Km), desde Paterna del Madera (16km), o incluso desde Bogarra (34km), disfrutando antes de un impresionante entorno por los desfiladeros y poljes de la Sierra del Agua y el Calar de la Osera, embriagándonos de una naturaleza casi virgen y sobrecogedora. La ruta tiene poca circulación, mucho arbolado, abundantes fuentes y arroyos, y una pendiente continua pero suave.
Después de dejar la bici continuaremos con la opción 1ª.
3ª.-
Si se quiere y disponemos de más tiempo, podemos hacer la ruta histórica original que nos llevará una jornada (5-6 horas). Para ello saldriamos desde Paterna del Madera por la AB-24. Camino del Pino Gordo del Toril, cruzamos por varios caminos que nos pueden llevar bien a Cañada de Provencio(AB-24), o bien a Riopar (AB-23), por lo que podemos escoger varias opciones para finalizar la ruta.
Recomiendo acercarse por el camino a Riopar. Desde el Cortijo del Malojar, las vistas de los picos del Gallinero con sus impresionantes moles calcáreas, se asemejan a ciclópeos barcos que surcan la Sierra del Agua rumbo al valle del rio Mundo.
Una estación recomendada para la ruta es la primavera, tanto por el clima suave como por el aroma y colorido de la vegetación: romero, rosal, fresno, chaparro, espino... y el pino, siempre el pino como el rey que nos rodea con varias de sus variedades: laricio y carrasco.

Pino Gordo del Toril
Most probably this is the biggest pine of the whole Albacete province (Spain- Castilla La Mancha). I've seen how even 4 people could not embrace its stem.
This formidable piece of "laricio" pine (pinus nigra) is hidden in a beautiful location, just placed at the end of "Collado del Toril" (Toril hillock), and well protected by Gallineros peak cord, which constitutes the natural border between Paterna del Madera an Cañada del Provencio towns.
Cache is located near the "Pino Gordo del Toril" (Toril fat pine), among some big rocks on NE direction.
To go there, you have different options. It depends on the time we have and on our preferences.
You should always walk on the last path to the cache (or riding a 4 legs animal ;-) ), following a pleasant and well indicated trail: AB-24, which in turn not many time ago linked Paterna del Madera with Cañana del Provencio towns.
Joaquin Muñoz Pozo, "El Penas", shepherd, poet and lover of Paterna del Madera and its mountains, refers to this trail AB-24 ( -- my excuses for the translation -- ):
"I hear the water inside me
the definite light I am
as the light who makes this valley"
Due to the roughtness of the terrain, it's recommended to wear proper footgear to safe our ankles.
Different OPTIONS to reach the cache:
1st.-
If we bet for a half day short trekking, I recommend you leave the car at the C-415 road, km.184 -> (N 38º 32.691´ W 2º 22.956' a1296m). This is the road which goes from Riopar to El Batan del Puerto. We'll start to walk by following AB-24 trail, that is crossing right there, and goes across the "Barranco del Toril" (Toril cliff), in the direction of Cañada del Provencio. From this starting point we will take around 45 minutes walking to reach the cache.
If we have more time, we could enjoy one easy trek to the top of Gallinero peak ->(N 38º 31.688 W 2º 22.853' a1630m). From there you could have a bird's eye view of all Segura mountain chain around us. To go to the peak we must go back around 200m on the trail we were following before and turn to the left just between two trail signals. We'll reach the peak easyly by following any of the rough rock paths that traverse the NW slope of the peak.
2nd.-
Another interesting option for BTT's is to cycle to the refered km184/C-415. You could start from El Batan del Puerto (8km), from Paterna del Madera (16km), or even from Bogarra (34km), and enjoy the narrow valleys of Sierra del Agua and El Calar de la Osera, being intoxicated by an almost virgin nature that gently coexist with us. The road is quiet with no traffic, you could see forests, steams, rivers, deep and narrow valleys. The slope for cicling is not strong but persistent and continuous. Once we arrive to km184/C-415, we'll leave the bike and will start from the 1st point commented before.
3rd.-
If you wish and you have enough time, you could afford to make the historical trail in one day trip (5-6 hours). We will take AB-24 trail, from Paterna del Madera. On the way to the "Pino Gordo del Toril" we will cross with other trails, in such a way they could bring us to different destinations. That is the case of AB-23 (Paterna - Riopar).
Once we reach the "Pino Gordo del Toril", I recommend to go back and switch to AB-23 trail that goes directly to Riopar, so we could take a glance of the Gallinero cord and finish our journey on a more touristic town: Riopar.
On the way to Riopar the views of Gallinero peaks from the Malojar farm, represent us like cyclopeous ships sailing on top of "Sierra del Agua" cord mountains towards the "Rio Mundo" valley.
One recommended season to visit the cache is spring, becasuse of the mild weather conditions and the fragance and coloring of the vegetation: rosemary, wild rosebush, ash, ilex, hawthorn,... and the pine... always the pine like a king that is all around of us with some of its varieties: "laricio"(pinus nigra) and "carrasco" (allepo pine).
