Geocache Description:

This is a multi cache mostly on pavement apart from the final stage where there is marked path along a woodland trail. The co-ordinates mentioned at the beginning are not the actual cache location, but your starting point.

Elderslie is a village in Renfrewshire, located between Paisley and Johnstone. It is most famous for being the birthplace of Sir William Wallace – The Hero of Scottish National Independence. However, much as the local people are very proud of this, there is much more history here.

We have made up this short walk to let you see some of the history of our village. It involves some simple arithmetic so you will need a pen and a piece of paper. It should take around an hour and a half to complete and return to your car. Although we have made this as a walk it can be started off by car as, just before the last co-ordinates it involves a slight doubling back. At each location you will need to have a look around for the answers to the clues – this will give you the co-ordinates for the next location. When you arrive at the cache, inside the box you will find a short explanation of the history behind each location.

Code: Substitute the following numbers for letters as required;
B J L O P Q R V
9 2 3 0 3 7 5 5

1. N 55° 50.135, W 004°29.320. Elderslie’s most famous Landmark.Have a look around to find the answers to the clues you will need to find the next location.
N 55° (L+Q x5). (the digits added together of the date of the 1st Ordnance Survey Map mentioned on one of the information boards)(LxL)
W 004° (J)(The number of plaques ÷ by 3, then x 4).{(20x the number of thistles around the landmark) added to (all the individual digits above the plaques x10) + Q}
ALSO AT THIS STAGE PLEASE TAKE A NOTE OF THE AGE OF THE YEW TREE AS YOU WILL NEED THIS LATER ON.
Now you are ready to move on to part two of the puzzle.

2. Well, it’s a bit boring!
For the next location- N 55° (BxV+V).(age of tree)
Have a look around.
W 004° 28.(the number of notches around the top of the feature x 54 minus the number of words on the sign mounted on the front of the appropriately named building directly across the road)
These co-ordinates will give you part three of the puzzle.

3. Victorian Pat – Let him post you to the cache!
Once again, look at the feature.
N 55° (using the code, multiply the 2 letters at the top and then multiply the result by J).(use the 2nd letter of the next word and the 1st letter of the 2nd word and use them as the next two digits using the code)(use the 1st letter of the last line again using the code.
W 004° (the last digit on the last line x Q).(the last 3 digits on the last line x3 + Q + V).

You now have the co-ordinates for the cache. However, the best place to enter the area is at N 55° 50.112, W004° 28.772. There is parking at this location if you have taken the car and a gate with a footpath. Please keep to the footpath as it skirts one of the fairways of the golf course.

If you have enjoyed this walk and would like to know more about Elderslie most of the information we used for this cache was obtained from the booklet “History of Elderslie” by local writer Derek P. Parker and can be obtained via the Elderslie Community Council.

HAPPY HUNTING!
