The Mt. Orient Overlook cache is located just off of the Robert Frost Trail, starting from the Amhthyst Brook Conservtation Area in Amherst, MA. Distance is about 1.35 miles to the cache from the parking area, as the crow flies.
This is a moderate hike to the cache if you follow the Robert Frost trail (orange markers) from the Amethyst Brook Conservation Area. When you pass the old car you will know that you have left the flat area of the hike.
About 2/3 of the way to the cache you will encounter some areas that have recently been logged. When in doubt of the way, look for the orange markers or the worn trail with exposed rocks.
Bring your camera as the view from the lookout is very nice. The entire Holyoke Range, from Long Mountain to Mt. Holyoke, extends along the horizon. Houses in Amherst and Pelham can be seen, along with UMASS.
Caution should be taken as the overlook consists of exposed stone, so it can be slippery after rains. Cache is located about 50' off of the trail in an area that should allow for examination of the cache without muggles being courious.
The initial cache contents include some handmade magnets, a bunch of postcards (mostly MA), a magnetic emotions display, a rubber ball and a silver 1941 Mercury Head dime for the FTF.
There are numerous trails in this area, so you can continue on to explore more of the area or hike back the way you came.
