Stage Coach Road Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

LavaLizard: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

If the cache owner addresses the issues that lead to archival and contacts me within a reasonable period of time (6-8 weeks), it may be possible to unarchive the cache.

Geocache Description:

More safely reached while headed southbound as it is on the westside of the Highway 101. Nice dirt road. Cammo container. Replace cammo carefully, please.

Old Stage Coach Road dates back to 1850 when it was little more than a horse trail up over the pass. In 1850, our non-native population for the entire county was only 336. The coastal towns were linked by ship and stagecoach, but travel inland was hampered by the steep terrain over the Santa Lucia Mountains. A regular postal service was not established until 1855, when the once-a-week stage took mail between San Luis Obispo and San Miguel. Significant improvements to the stagecoach roadway were not made to the Cuesta Grade until 1876 when Chinese labor gangs under the direction of Ah Louis were put to work building this road (background photo is of Ah Louis).

It was paved in 1915 and served as Highway 101 until 1931.
