Geocache Description:

An interesting walk thru the old streets of Frome along part of the “Frome Town Trail” with its Numbered Plaques. This 4 stop multi cache is a mile including the walk to the final cache and return to the INFO centre.

The Frome tourist information centre is in the Round Tower just off the town centre car park at N51 13.953 W2 19.210. It’s open Monday-Saturday 10am - 5pm.

Frome has a market here on Wednesdays and Saturdays so parking can be a bit busy then.

The info centre has maps of the Frome Town Trail for sale that will lead you on a guided walk of historic Frome and provide some interesting history. The spots on the Map are marked by large round plaques. You might want to pick up a copy of the map for the history, but it’s not needed to complete the cache as the answers are mostly posted on plaques. Don’t forget to enjoy Frome while you walk through and find the numbers! :-)

(1) The posted coordinates take you to the Market Cross [plaque 2]. What year was the cross originally erected? The answer is in the form ABCD

(2) From the market cross walk up medieval Cheap street, where an ancient leat still channels the spring water down the centre of the pavement. When you reach the top you will find the source of the water at coordinates N51 13.817 W 002 19.236. There is a sign at the fountain with 6 words on it. Record the number of letters in the 5th and 6th words. These will be E and F.

(3) From the fountain walk up the church steps that lead to the entrance of St. Johns Church. Count the number of steps. Let the number of steps be GH.

(4) Now turn right at the top of the steps and navigate to N51 13.860 W2 19.416 You will need to cross the street in front of the church and go up Catherine Hill street and find plaque #11 at Shepherd’s Barton. According to the plaque, St. Katherine’s Chapel was founded before what year? The answer gives you JKLM.

You can walk back down Catherine Hill turning left at the bottom to the market cross to have a seat and work out the final cache location. Now we find out if you got all the right numbers! The final cache is about a quarter of a mile from the cross and is found by putting all the numbers into this form. N 51 AE.HBD W 002 GF.(K+M)KJ

You can get there either by walking along the road [this is the best route if you've got push chairs and need to avoid steps] or better yet take the public foot path along the river. Cache is in a camo coloured tupperware type box. Some Frome Goodies there.
