This old establishment was built and run by Irish immigrants:
Mickey and Jo Kilrow. Mickey was born is Roscommon Ireland and Jo,
in Kilkenny. They fled Ireland during the The Great Potato Famine
(An Gorta Mor 1847-1853) and took up residence in Great Bend,
Pennsylvania. This was a time in US history when the Irish were
looked upon as a blight as well. Through it all, they persevered
and made a successful living tending to weary travellers.
Jo passed on in 1901 and Mickey in 1910. They rest by the Kilrow
Cross that is on your left half way through the cemetery as you
enter the main gate.
We marvel at how Irish immigrants could come to this country
with nothing and make a comfortable life for themselves. This is a
tribute to the strong will and work ethic of ALL
Irish-Americans!
From Rt. 11: Turn onto Randolph Rd. and a right onto McHugh Hill
Rd. Follow that up the hill and enter St. Lawrence Cemetery on the
left.
The cache contains a log book, some Irish-themed trade items and
Irish music CDs. There are also ribbons for 1st, 2nd and 3rd
finder!
We would like to keep this theme if we could, and for those who
visit: May your coffin be built with the wood of a hundred year
old Oak tree which I will plant tomorrow!
MAY BE DIFFICULT TO FIND IN WINTER.
