Geocache Description:

Fosse Bridge One and Fosse Bridge Two are a pair of geo-caches on the Fosse Way, near where it crosses the Sherston branch of the River Avon. Much of this former Roman road from Cirencester to Bath is now a byway, including this section.

The byway crosses the river on an arched stone bridge. Although the bridge will only find its way on to a calendar if photographed somewhat carefully (photos attached to Fosse Bridge One geo-cache listing), the byway and the river are attractive. There are good views from parts of the byway walk and paddling is possible at the bridge.

The bridge is at the centre of the former Roman settlement of White Walls, which extended about 150m along the Fosse Way on both sides of the river crossing. Although there is no sign of the settlement now, pottery ranging from the first to the fourth centuries, bronze ornaments, enamelled jewellery and Roman roof-tiles have been recovered from the site. Coins have also been found, including those showing Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony, Vespasian and Constantine I.

Park at one of the waypoints listed for the Fosse Bridge #1 cache and walk along the byway. The byway is reasonably well surfaced so boots are not essential.

Given our geo-caching name the cache contains items on a red theme!
