For roman catholics June 24 is dedicated to St. John / San Juan. On this day in 1949 - completely out of the bleu - enormous clouds of smoke appeared above de Cumbre Vieja
Within a span of 38 days there were eruptions of 3 volcano's: Llano del Banco (1250 m.) , Duraznero (1902 m.) and Hoyo Negro (1742 m.)!
From the Llano del Bancocrater glowing red lava -destroying and covering everything on its way down - streamed towards San Nicolas. But miraculously the village itself was spared! In gratitude for this the villagers set up a monument dedicated to Virgen de la Fatima and and every september there is a fiesta with a memorialservice at the monument.
The lava streamed all the way down to the sea at Puerto de Naos building a 2 km's long peninsula into the sea. Nowadays it houses bananaplantations
At the monument there are 2 plaques: 1 round and 1 square.
Round: contains a date: day-month-year ==> AB-C-DEFG
Find the CACHECOORDS by deducting(=subtrackting) from the startcoords the following numbers:
N - .BE(G+D)
W - .F(A+C)B
Elevation at the cache 1124 m.
Start your hike from the memorial up: the road soon turns into an old camino real. Once up on the Cumbre Viejo continue and after several hundreds of meters you can see a signpost (alike one of the pictures) pointing left towards the Coladas(=lavafields). Follow this all the way up and onto the - sometimes spectacular - lavastreams !
Enjoy your hike, but do not forget to wear good hiking boots and carry enough drinks.
Small note on cache maintenance: Maintenance will be done by the two german cachers who frequently visit the island: B44 and Samlee.
