Hines Dr. "Power Trail" Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

-DeRock-: Greetings,

While Geocaching.com would like to continue to hold the location for you, doing so blocks other cachers from placing caches in the area. We feel that this cache has not been maintained for what is a reasonable amount of time, and thus I regretfully must archive it.

If you are able to get out and replace the cache, simply drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. I will be more than happy to take a look at it to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

Thank you,

-DeRock-

Geocache Description:

A while ago there was a MiGO thread started by Team 360 asking if there were any “Power Trails” in the area. Not knowing what they were, everyone of course asked. The reply was shocking to The Roving Ravenstones who first placed this cache - ”there are literaly trails in California where a cache has been placed every .1mi., just for the sole purpose of getting 100 or so finds in 1 day”.

Now we don’t have any thing like this in our area, but Hines Drive is the closest thing to it with 54 currently placed along this fabulous Wayne County Park. Below is a brief history about Hines Drive, and current links for all the caches. The Roving Ravenstones originally set this cache as a tribute to the Hines park system. The Seegert Seekers have since adopted this cache and we will try to update the links on this page as often as we can to keep them up-to-date. We've also created a Hines Drive Cache bookmark for everyone.

This 2-stage multi-cache starts in a small Decon box at the beginning of the actual Hines Drive park system where it branches off from 7-mile road. It ends in a standard Team CoyChev Ammo box after a nice short hike from the last park along the drive, almost at Ford Road.

Hines drive actually parallels 7-mile for about another mile west of the beginning point of this multi-cache, where it truely begins at it's intersection with Rogers Street. There is a cache at that very beginning point named "Log The Cache". Hines Drive ends about 18 miles east-southeast just past it's intersection point with Ford Road.

***Please Note! - You may only park on Hines Drive in those areas specifically posted with parking signs. There are also some easily identified areas with trash cans for parking without signs. If you do not see obvious parking with trash cans, and you do not see any sign designating the spot as a parking area - it is not okay to park there. The police actively patrol the area and will ticket & tow improperly parked vehicles.

TheHistory

By the 1920s, enlightened planners recognized that Wayne County’s rural character would quickly be transformed by the automobile. Leroy C. Smith, manager of the Wayne County Road Commission, warned that “an industrial center like Detroit is likely to place too much emphasis on the commercial highway and partially lose sight of the beautiful and restful places which still may be preserved.” The road commission sought to capitalize on the rivers winding through the county by edging them with parkways. In November 1929, Wayne Count Road Commissioner Edward N. Hines announced plans to develop a parkway system along the Rouge River and its branches. The parkway was soon named in his honor. In a paper delivered in February 1931, Leroy Smith explained that “the eventual plan is to include all the land along this stream from Detroit to Northville and from the top of the bank on one side of the river to the top of the bank on the opposite side.” He continued: “The plan includes a parkway drive following the stream through the lowland, with grade separations at important highway and railroad crossings...Such a drive, winding through a valley flanked with wooded slopes and rolling hills, will be unequaled as a parkway development.” The purpose of the parkway was two-fold: to decrease traffic congestion on other routes, and to server “the individuals who need fresh air, sunshine, and care free recreation.”

The commission’s first priority was to procure the necessary land. It then turned to developing the road and other amenities. Work first concentrated on a section of the river valley between Northville and Plymouth, in the northwestern corner of Wayne County. The parkway was established as far east as Newburgh Road before World War II. By the end of the war, the commission was eager to extend the route from Newburgh Road to its eastern terminus at Ford Road and Rouge Park. The commission had acquired the land and designed eighteen bridges to serve the parkway and intersecting roads. The structures, which were estimated to cost $1.5 million to erect, included ten highway grade separations, six river crossings, and two bridges that crossed both the river and the parkway.
