The cache is in an ammo can, and originally contained a small wooden box of old US Coins, some silver, including Mercury Dimes, Buffalo Nickels (not the new ones), Indian Pennies, Wheat Pennies, Liberty Head Nickels, a Walking Liberty Half Dollar and More. Check out the picture below, to see the loot. Take a coin or two, without trading, just for visiting the cache. We also included some kids toys, a gun trigger lock, and a calculator.
Kelton, also known as Indian Creeek, was founded in 1869, it was the first large town west of Promontory along the old transcontinental railroad. It served as a section station for the railroad as well as a center for Stage Coach and Freight lines running into Idaho and Oregon. There were many houses, stores, saloons, and even a hotel. There are many old stories about shootouts, stagecoach robberies and lost gold associated with the town. When the Lucin cutoff was built in 1903, railroad traffic and the town dwindled. When the tracks were taken up in 1942, the town finally died. Not much is left, but if you take some time to look around, you can get the idea that there used to be a lot more out here.
Be sure to visit and log the old benchmark here too. Its the second oldest benchmark in the state.
FYI, if you go to the BLM offices in Salt Lake, they have a FREE book on all the old Ghost Towns along the old Railroad.
