Geocache Description:

This is a regular geocache located in the Empire Ranch/Las Cienegas Natural Conservation Area near Sonoita.

I got my Today's Cacher T-shirt in the mail the other day and also read their latest on-line issue. Happened to mention to Trusty Companion that I'd like to write an article for Today's Cacher about the Empire Ranch. We discussed the topic, realized that we needed more pictures and that just called for another day spent in the Ranch. What a hardship that would be! Not! We checked out the map and looked up areas we wanted to explore further and set off. In case you've never been to the Empire Ranch area...directions from Tucson: head east on I10. Off at Hwy 83 and head south. Turn east into the Empire Ranch/Las Cienegas Natural Conservation Area between milepost 40 and 39. Look for a smallish BLM sign set back from the road. The turn is actually easy to miss. We come close to over-shooting it every time we come down. There is a kiosk a short ways in on the south side of the road. Stop and take a look at the map. The road system throughout the area is fairly well marked and each road is labeled EC900 and upwards.

This cache is in the Empire Gulch area just behind the Empire Ranch headquarters. Take the main road in until it comes to a T. Turn north and go through the gate to EC901. Follow your GPS but do not stop on the road to do this cache. You will pass the cache on your way to the Empire Gulch parking area. This is an old picnic area. Park in the parking area and take the trail to the cache. Do be careful, this looks like prime rattlesnake habitat although we didn't see any. Creek is running so watch the little ones as well.
