Geocache Description:

Free parking at Picnic Area N 51°17.375 W 002°49.633
Fairly level walk. The cache is a lunch box.

The Mendip Hills today is protected for its natural beauty & provides excellent walking territory with ever changing views & the flat terrain of the levels lends itself to cycling.

About 500 meters down the road is the ancient town of Axbridge with its medieval square, 13th Century Church & St John’s Hunting Lodge (now an interesting museum, open 1.0pm to 4.0pm Easter to 30th Sept.)with free parking in the square for 1 hour or all day free parking in the Town car park at N51 17.192 W002 49.121.

Only 3 miles away is Cheddar Gorge, the jewel in the heart of the Mendip Hills, a long ravine with the highest inland cliffs in Britain and the famous caves which penetrate deep into the hills.

I suggest you leave the busy A371 as soon as possible by crossing the road & going through the gate at N 51°17.455 W 002°49.691. On the way stop at the little iron seat at N 51°17.352 W 002°49.528 to admire the view. To your left is Glastonbury Tor with the tower on top clearly visible on a clear day. The large mound ahead is Brent Knoll & to your right is King’s Wood. If the bushes have grown obstructing your view. Just climb 30m up the bank behind you; it's well worth the effort)
Should you wish to take a pleasant stroll into Axbridge after you have found the cache go over the stile at N 51° 17.371 W 002° 49.408 turn left at bottom of path, walking parallel to the road continue along in front of the houses on the hillside & when you meet the A371 cross over to the entrance to the footpath at N51°17.295 W002°49.145 & follow around left to the Square at N51°17.241 W002°49.023.
WARNING If you intend going to my Hillside Axbridge (GCXYHX) or Frys Hill(GCQB59)caches after this one, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES TRY TO APPROACH THROUGH THE WOODS as it is dangerous & barbed wire fenced. The safest & quickest route is via the stile at N 51° 17.371 W 002° 49.408.then follow the road in front of the houses as above.

NOTE -
After heavy rain the path from the gate to the stile can get very muddy so at these times I suggest you turn right from the car park & walk on the verge towards Cheddar making for the small path running behind the barrier at N51 17.317 W002 49.445 (Do be careful crossing the road; this is a very fast road) Follow the path up through the allotments to the stile & you will be near the cache.
