The Town Hall was the most expensive of the projects announced by
Chatham's Town Council in the 19th century. The building work
started in 1898, and was completed in January 1900. The new
building provided offices for various council departments, as well
as a council chamber. The building still in The Brook, at the
bottom of Dock Road and Whiffens Avenue. With the coming of the new

gardens)
@ N 51.23.116 - E000.31.615
You are now standing at the original entrance of cemetery that was
opened in 1828 in Whiffens Avenue in Chatham, as the churchyard at
St Mary's Church in Dock Road was overcrowded. The land was
acquired by the parish from the Board of Ordnance. Burials
continued here until 1870, when the new cemetery opened in
Maidstone Road. In 1905, the cemetery was opened as the Town Hall
Gardens.
Here at the entrance is a memorial stone to the memory of Sergeant
Patrick Feeney, who was shot in 1834 by Private Benjamin Gardner in
Chatham Barracks.
How old was Patrick when he died. BC
When it was opened as a garden, most of the headstones were moved
against the two walled edges of the burial ground (The north-east
and south-east walls). Those against the north-east wall are
generally in better condition than those against the south-east
wall.
