Geocache Description:

Onalaska's oldest cache.

An uphill hike, just under 3/4 mile long with scenic views along the way.

Park at N43 53.692, W091 11.985. (Some of the streets in the subdivison where you park may not show up on a map as they are very new.) Take the path up the hill. The entire path is a grassy/packed dirt trail. Stay on the trail or you'll make this one more difficult than necessary. The cache is a regular-sized plastic container located near the top of the bluff. After you find the cache, wander around the summit and take in some of the views. The views on your hike are of Green Coulee. (Coulee is another word for a valley with hills on either side.)

The entire surrounding area is often referred to as the "Coulee Region" because of the many coulees that seemingly run on forever. The natural beauty of the "Coulee Region" is a result of the glaciers missing this area during the Ice Age, leaving the countryside around Onalaska alive with rolling hills, rocky bluffs and winding valleys.

Of historical note, Onalaska was originally founded by Thomas G. Rowe from New York, who came here in 1851. It soon became a flourishing lumber town. The name "Onalaska" came from the poem, "The Pleasures of Hope," by Thomas Campbell, published in 1799. Rowe liked the line, "The wolf's long howl from Oonalaska's shore," and decided to use the name, only with one "o".
