In medieval times a Pinfold was an enclosure where stray farm
animals were kept until claimed by their owners for a fee, as
without hedges and fences straying animals would have been a menace
to crops. This is from where the surname Pinder originates, as it
means 'one who impounds' or 'a poundkeeper'. Capenhurst's Pinfold
has existed for centuries, and was recently restored by the Parish
Council with the aid of a grant.
