Rail Safety Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ledge6: Since this one was muggled, I think I will archive this one and probably put a new one out in the spring. Same park, different location. Too much snow right now to do it. Thanks to all who found the cache, I hope you learned a little about train safety.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in a nice little town park which is situated near a very busy Canadian National Railroad mainline. The cache is located just off a paved trail and is quite accessible.

Look – Listen – and Live. Train time is Anytime. These are the slogans of Operation Lifesaver Inc. Operation Lifesaver Inc. is a nonprofit educational program dedicated to reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities at highway-railroad grade crossings and pedestrian/trespasser incidents on or near railroad property. As a model railroader and train enthusiast, I enjoy watching trains from a safe distance. I also see the importance of educating people on how to be safe when trains are nearby.

The town park where you will find this cache is located adjacent to the Canadian National’s mainline between Chicago and the Twin Cities. It sees about 30 trains pass by it every day. If that sounds like there is a lot of train traffic through this little town, it is. That is what Operation Lifesaver is all about, educating people on being safe around trains. Children are fascinated by trains, and the more we can teach them about being safe, the better. This cache can be treated as a trade item cache, but I will make sure it is stocked with materials from the Operation Lifesaver group. Pencils, pins, key-chains, coloring books, etc., as well as brochures promoting safety around trains will be stocked in the cache. I would encourage you to take an item and a brochure or two and leave nothing, as it will leave me more room for stocking educational materials. Also, please let me know if the supply is running low and I will re-stock it. While you are at the park, please take a moment to talk with your kids about safety around trains and railroad crossings. If you have young drivers in the family, it would be a great opportunity to discuss driving and grade crossing safety. The cache itself is well away from the tracks, though if you would like to see a train, you can let the kids play on the playground and wait for one. There is a natural barrier between the park and the tracks, so watching trains from the park is safe. Be sure to wave to the engine crew and remember to Look – Listen – and Live!
