Geocache Description:

This 2-stage cache will take you on a fairly short journey through the historic Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center in search of the legendary treasure of Jacob Hubler. Your search will take you along the Sober’s Run Loop Trail just off of Belfast Road.

What is the historic significance of Jacobsburg? What does someone named Jacob Hubler have to do with it? And, what’s the story behind his fabled treasure?

Jacobsburg is best known as the manufacturing site of the celebrated Henry “long rifles” from 1792 through the late 1800’s. However, long before any of that occurred, in the year 1740, a German immigrant named Jacob Hubler founded the settlement that eventually came to bear his name. Jacob still maintains close ties to his settlement: his unmarked grave lies somewhere on the site. As for his fabled “treasure”…….

Jacob was rumored to have gathered together a very curious assortment of objects that apparently disappeared sometime after his death in 1789. For years, local historians have wondered what happened to the collection. Did his heirs bury it along with Jacob in his unmarked grave? Did they actually conceal it somewhere within the historic site for future generations to discover? Or, did they just toss it out with the trash, unaware of its magnificent importance? Now, thanks to the discovery of a long lost “clue” (left behind by Jacob’s descendants), these questions may finally be answered, ending a 200 year old mystery!

Where does the “clue” lead? Well, in order to figure that out, you have to find it. Once you do, it is believed the clue will lead to the site of Jacob’s Treasure. To reach the site, all you have to do is use the clue in the following set of coordinates: N40 47.525 W075 1A.BC3
To do so, add the first two digits on the Clue Marker together and place the result in spot A. Then, place the last two digits of the Clue Marker in spots B and C.

Pretty easy, huh? Good hunting and enjoy your walk through Jacob Hubler’s historic settlement of Jacobsburg. Don’t forget to CITO (bags are provided)! Thanks!

The Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center is a multi-use, 1168-acre facility featuring hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, wildlife watching, hunting, fishing, picknicking and educational programs. The Center is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Dogs are permitted on lead. It is recommended that blaze orange be worn in this area during hunting seasons.
