Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coordinates, and there is no need to go there.

We have visited each of the locations depicted in the pictures displayed below and we hope that you will find it interesting doing the research for this cache.

Each picture has been converted into a waypoint. At each of the waypoints there is a tag that provides one number for the coordinates of the final cache location. The final cache location is at N45 21.xxx W75 51.xxx. The tags are in the form xxx xxx, with the North coordinate first and with one of the x’s replaced by a number.

In order to calculate the corresponding waypoint for each picture, it is necessary to find the coordinates for the city associated with the picture. Great precision is not required as you only use the degree portion of the coordinates. The first step in calculating the latitude of the corresponding waypoint is to divide the degree portion of the coordinate for the picture by 100. If the latitude was North, then add the result of the calculation to the minute portion (xx.xxx) of latitude of the posted coordinate. If the latitude was South, then subtract the result of the calculation from the minute portion of the latitude of the posted coordinate. To calculate the longitude of the corresponding waypoint divide the degree portion by 500. If the picture longitude was East, then subtract the result of the calculation from the minute portion (xx.xxx) of the longitude of the posted coordinate. If the longitude was West, then add the resulting calculation to the minute portion of the longitude of the posted coordinate. These calculations will preserve the relative position in the world, although not to scale.

For example, the degree portions for Ottawa would be N45 and W75. To calculate the latitude, divide the 45 by 100 to get .45 and add (since Ottawa is North) to 21.100 to get 21.550. To calculate the longitude, divide 75 by 500 to get .15 and add (since Ottawa is West) to 51.800 to get 51.950. Note that none of the pictures is from Ottawa.

It is recommended that you wear long pants and sleeves as you may encounter thorns at some of the waypoints. Also, the shortest route between waypoints may not be the quickest. You may be tempted to “thrash through a thicket of thorns”, but this is completely unnecessary. There is always a way to get to the tag location while making minimal contact with thorns, although it will not be possible to avoid contact altogether.

One of the calculated waypoints ended up in the middle of one of these thickets of thorns, so we moved the waypoint for Picture #3. It is 15 meters at a bearing of 43 degrees true from the calculated position.

We suggest that travel related items be traded in this cache.

As a reward for the first finder, we have included a set of coins, with one for each of the countries shown in the pictures.

Enjoy.
