Geocache Description:

The above are NOT the coordinates for the cache site but for Mitchell’s Cottage Car Park and will be your starting point for establishing the cache site coordinates.

Turn off SH 8 in Fruitlands at Symes Road (S 45° 20.578 E 169° 18.085) and proceed up the hill to Mitchell’s Cottage Car Park at S 45° 20.570 E 169° 17.448.

The Cottage is open (unlocked) between 9am and 4pm during the winter months; in the summer for a considerably longer time. You may be able to gain access outside the opening times by appealing to the inhabitants of Rapid # 73, Symes road. Remember, however, that there would be no point in visiting in other than daylight hours.

Go onto the Cottage grounds, pausing on the way to read the Information Display, and then into the Cottage. In the old kitchen, opposite the coal range and above the doorway leading to the old pantry/larder you will find screwed to the wall a small orange plaque with a number on it. Unless you are good at mental arithmetic you will need to jot this number down onto a scrap of paper. Now divide this number by 1,000 (XXXXX becomes XX.XXX), this new number is X.

The cache is to be found at: S 45° (X + 4.097)
E 169° (X + 0.856)

Mitchell's Cottage: Andrew Mitchell had a remarkable skill with stone.

The drystone cottage at Fruitlands, that he took almost 20 years to build, still stands in almost perfect condition.

Mitchell's Cottage is a the work of a master craftsman, a stone mason, Skilfully constructed, this cottage is both a memorial to the times in which it was built and also to Andrew Mitchell, a man who clearly valued high craftsmanship.

A history of the man, his times and his work can be read on a display board near the entrance to the property

It will be very easy to find once you have worked out the coordinates. There is good parking at the cache site. The cache is hidden at ground level in the only possible place it could be. It is invisible at 0 metres. Please replace loose rocks so that the cache is hidden properly.

When hidden it contained:
