Geocache Description:

Complete this one and you can add amateur palaeontologist to your resume.

The great bone hunt is on! Prepare your expedition and head into the Perth hills in search of dinosaurs. Follow their prehistoric trail and find the palaeontologists holy grail – The Dinosaur Graveyard.

At each of the first three waypoints you will have to find and identify a prehistoric fossil. Once you have identified the fossil remains you must convert its name into a number using the code A=1, B=2 … Z=26. For example RIOJASAURUS = 18+9+15+10+1+19+1+21+18+21+19 = 152. You must then add together your three numbers (one from each waypoint) to give you one three digit total. Adjust this total as directed to give you the coordinates to the fourth waypoint which is the cache.

The success of an expedition relies on good planning. Unless you’re a walking dinosaur encyclopaedia you will need some way to identify any dinosaur fossils you may discover. I suggest raiding your children’s bookshelves or the local library for some comprehensive pictorial dinosaur guide. The dinosaurs you will encounter can be found in the book "The ultimate book of dinosaurs" ISBN 0-75258-308-5.

You should start your journey from the car park at S32 00.739 / E116 02.040 and follow the walk track that continues up the hill.

Hills, rocks and trees may have affected the accuracy of the listed co-ordinates so use them in conjunction with the listed clues.

On this “dig” no digging is required. Once you locate your first waypoint you’ll know what to look for at WP2 and WP3.

Beyond WP3 there is a level area with great views where you can rest and work out your solutions before moving on to the cache.

The cache is a 6 litre clear plastic rectangular container. It contains the usual cache requisites,14 assorted dinosaurs (only 1 T-Rex though) and 8 finder badge rewards. The first finder also gets an authentic replica dinosaur tooth on a keychain.

PLEASE DO NOT POST LOGS OR PHOTOS THAT MAY REVEAL THE IDENTITY OF THE "FOSSILS" THAT YOU FIND AT THE WAYPOINTS OR LOGS OR PHOTOS THAT MAY INDICATE THE LOCATION OF THE CACHE.

After finding the cache you can retrace your journey or continue on the walk track as it is part of a circuit that should lead you back to the car park. Expect a round trip journey of around 3 km over well established walk trails with minor bush excursions. Note though that there are several steep sections with loose gravel.

WAYPOINT 1 – S32 00.860 / E116 02.028. About 8.5-9 metres from the black stump totem. On rocky ground and with city views uninterrupted look to your left 3-4 metres. Dinosaur name has 10 letters.

WAYPOINT 2 – S32 00.984 / E116 02.200. Seeking the assistance of your local native brothers will help you find this one. Dinosaur name has 18 letters.

WAYPOINT 3 – S32 01.136 / E116 02.184. A rolling one gathers none but this very large one has a little. Dinosaur name has 11 letters.

WAYPOINT 4 – THE CACHE – S32 01.XXX / E116 02.XXX . Subtract 390 from the three digit total you got from adding together waypoints 1, 2 and 3 and use the result to complete your S co-ordinate. Subtract 410 from the three digit total you got from adding together waypoints 1, 2 and 3 and use the result to complete your E co-ordinate.

CACHE UPDATE: DAMAGED CACHE REPLACED 02/07/08

Cache is now a 2 litre clip lock food container. For a little more protection it lies under a large fossilized dinosaur egg. Like most fossils this one is a little fragile and won't put up with rough treatment so please take care.

Bear in mind that the new hiding spot may appear an attractive home to some bush critter so be cautious.
