Geocache Description:

The coordinates lead you to a Granite Memorial Stone engraved: Humphrey Turner, Came from Eng. To Scituate 1626, Died 1678, His Wife Lydia Gamer, Their Children John, John Thomas, Daniel, Nathaniel, William, Lydia, Mary 1856.

The Story Goes: Humphrey Turner was one of the "Men of Kent", early settlers of Satuit. (now Scituate). He died and was buried in 1678, the stone that marked his grave (if there was one) disappeared long ago.

In 1856 descendants decided to erect a monument in memory of their ancestors to be placed in the old First Parish Cemetery in Scituate. It was brought from Quincy by several yoke of oxen and when the team reached South Scituate, (now Norwell) they asked where the First Parish Cemetery was and were told it was near by, not knowing the destination should have been First Parish Cemetery in Scituate. The monument was unloaded and later when the bill for it was sent the descendants, they refused to pay until it was delivered to the proper cemetery. The Quincy firm refused to move it until it was paid for.

There is no one buried under this elaborate Memorial in the First Parish Cemetery, South Scituate (now Norwell) so now you know the rest of the story!
