Geocache Description:

A rich, green forest trail will be your route to this cache, to be found nearby in a magnificent old hemlock grove.

I took a chance on this trail while searching for cache sites at Lakes Gordon and Koon and it didn't take long to realize i had found a keeper! The sound of water rushing over the Thomas W. Koon dam will accompany you as you follow the trail and glimpses of Lake Gordon can be seen sparkling through the laurel along the way. Three deer bounded by on the first day i was there and a huge patch of pink Ladies Slippers surprised me on the way back. The trail to the cove is very user friendly with only a few slight changes in elevation, making for a wonderful hike. Be sure to bring your camera and a fishing pole if you like!

Lake Koon Statistics
Built 1931-1932
Lake Koon is 2.2 miles long
2,300,000,000 gallon capacity
Dam itself is 620 feet long and contains 70,000 cubic yards of concrete.
This and much more can be found on 2 bronze plaques on the front of the gate house near the center of the dam.

From 2.6 miles above the Md-Pa line on route 220, turn right onto Lake Gordon Road and drive 1 mile to a concrete bridge. Turn left onto the bridge and drive 1.4 miles, crossing the breast of the dam and parking at a pull-off at the southern end of the dam at N39 45.792, W78 39.769. The trail starts at the back of the parking area, climbing up a low bank and then widening and proceeding into the forest. Hike to N39 45.545, W78 39.998 where there is subtle evidence of a fork in the grassy trail. From here a short bushwack, 200 feet in a westerly direction, will bring you to the cache. A few steps then will take you through the hemlock forest to the cove below. Stop for awhile and enjoy the solitude and savor the view. As always, use caution when reaching for and retrieving a cache and enjoy!

Please hide cache as you found it as this area is frequented by fishermen muggles. Thanks!
