Geocache Description:

This cache is located near 'Castlewood Loop Trail', in Castlewood State Park *SOUTH* of the Meramec River. Access to the trail is via Lone Elk County Park. Coordinates at top of page are for recommended parking. All waypoints needed to find the cache are displayed on maps, listed as text and in a downloadable .GPX file on this page. (Permission to place this cache was granted by Castlewood park superintendent, Richard Love, and Barb Wilson, MDNR Training Coordinator in Jefferson City.)

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Your goal is to find a set of numbers at some of the waypoints that will give you enough information to project a new waypoint and find the final cache (an ammo box in the woods!). Look at the map images to see how to get to parking, how to get to the trails and where the cache waypoints are. All waypoints start with the letter 'Z', which will help you locate them amongst other waypoints in your GPSr.

Q: What exactly am I looking for?
A: Five of the waypoints are trail post markers along the Castlewood Loop Trail. At the base of a tree near four of them (ZWPT1, ZWPT2, ZWPT3, ZWPT4) you will find an object with a number attached to it. The object, itself, is the same at each waypoint, so if you find one, you know what to look for at the others. There is no indication on the object as to whether the number is a distance or a bearing, but you will figure it out rather quickly. The fifth waypoint (ZMAIN) is the location from which to project a new waypoint, using the two sets of numbers found at the other four waypoints.

Q: If all I need to find is a set of numbers, why are there four objects with numbers on them?
A: If you can't find the object at one of the waypoints, you might still be able to find it at another waypoint. Once you find two sets of different numbers, you can skip the other waypoints and go right to ZMAIN and project a waypoint.

Q: Will you at least tell me what units the numbers are in?
A: The distance is in *** METERS *** and the bearing is in *** 'TRUE' DEGREES ***.

Q: I am standing at the ZMAIN waypoint. How do I project a waypoint?
A: This should help: http://www.lazylightning.org/documents/waypoint-projection.html

Q: The trail is a loop. Which direction do I walk it?
A: Choose one of these options: 1) At waypoint ZTUNL, take the small trail that leads you through the tunnel under the RR tracks. When it hooks up with the Caslewood Loop trail at ZLOOP, go right. The first cache waypoint you will get to in this direction is ZWPT1. (This is my favorite way to go) 2) At waypoint ZTUNL, follow the Chubb trail that parallels the RR tracks. It will eventually cross the tracks and meet up with the Castlewood Loop trail. The first cache waypoint you will reach going this way is ZWPT4.

Q: What are the terrain and trail conditions like?
A: From the parking area, you descending down a L-O-N-G hill to Meramec River bottomland. The terrain is flat from that point. The trails are mostly wide, shaded and well-maintained. Finding the final cache will require some minor bushwacking. You will have hiked more than 3 miles by the time you are back to your vehicle. As usual, bring water, bug spray, hiking boots, etc. Some of the trail will be muddy after a rain.
