Geocache Description:

Ramsden Clough was "out of bounds" until the Countryside Rights of Way (CRoW) Act became a reality for the Peak District in September 2004. It is a great area for lovers of peace and tranquility.

In his excellent book "The Pennine Divide" in the "Freedom to Roam" series, Andrew Bibby describes Ramsden Clough as a "strikingly beautiful and wild valley, enclosed by rocky outcrops high up on both sides of the river - it has deservedly been called one of the gems of the Peak District". Walk 9 in the book describes a walk taking in Ramsden Clough. There is also a longer walk there in book 5 of the series. In my opinion he understates the difficulities of descending the clough from the top - I think it is tricky with some danger involved.

You will need to take a recent copy of Ordnance Survey map OL1 to see the extent of the access land - picking an allowable and viable route to the cache is a challenge in itself. Note that an approach directly from the west is not possible due to steep cliffs (see OL1).

WARNING: The cache is in the upper part of the clough; the very nature of access land means that there are usually no tracks, and the ground can be very steep and uneven with a risk of twisted ankles or worse. Only attempt this cache if you are happy walking on such terrain. Do not attempt it when the ground is wet (i.e. not recommended in autumn and winter). Do not attempt it alone. Be properly equipped for all eventualities (mobiles won't work!).
