The Fungle Road is a scenic old Drove road linking Deeside and Tarfside. The walk to the cache starts in the village of Aboyne where all amenities can be found.
The Fungle and Firmounth Roads are two old Drove routes which link Deeside in the north with Tarfside in the south. The cache is hidden along the Fungle way, which is now a 12-mile public right of way footpath running in between the Estates of Glentanar and Forest of Birse. Don't worry - you are not required to walk all 12 miles, although you will be going up the steep initial section!
Park in the village of Aboyne, I parked outside the Boat Inn restaurant at N57 04.239 W002 47.220, which is handy for refreshments after the walk! Cross over the bridge and when you reach the road junction look along to the right - just past the last white cottage is a small green sign pointing up into the trees, this is the start of the Fungle. Take care walking along this short stretch of road as there is no pavement. Follow the path straight ahead at any forks past the couple of houses, then pass by the farm. Please observe the signs at the farm asking for dogs to be kept on leads as you pass through. After the farm, look to your right for the smaller path which crosses a small wooden bridge. This is the last fork in the path, and it is now straight on up to the cache! After the long walk up you will definitely want to do as the rock says... By the looks of it, I think this feature was created by the eccentric old laird William Cunliffe Brooks who was responsible for many inscribed stone wells on the nearby Glentanar Estate. A route through that Estate is known as the Wilcebe way - from Will C.B. The large insignia on our feature here looks like his initials. Can you make out the rest of the inscription?
After catching your breath and taking in the views (hopefully - although I didn't see much through the rain) the cache is hidden on the other side of the path. The tree cover will very possibly play havoc with your GPS for the last few meters so you may want to take the spoiler photo with you. Cache is in a rectangular box in a green bag.
You should allow 1 - 2 hours for this cache, and there are bins and refreshments in Aboyne. Also, if you time it right you can get a takeaway from the excellent Aboyne Tandoori - once a year these chaps donate all takings for the day to charity in memory of the owners' two boys so please support them if you fancy a treat!
