Geocache Description:

This is a smaller regular cache hidden in a nature center in Glenview, Illinois. Feel free to exchange small trading items related to nature.

This is our first cache placement, and we both agreed this site is ideal for a cache. We wanted to introduce other geocachers to the beauty of this protected area. Our fairly good-sized Rubbermaid main cache is located in The Grove, a nature center in Glenview, Illinois. The hours are Monday-Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm and weekends: 9 am – 5 pm. When arriving, park near The Interpretive Center (full of turtles, birds, snakes and fish) and go inside to get a map of the entire Grove (123 acres in its entirety!). When walking the trails and touring the grounds, be sure to observe The Grove Etiquette: Stay on the trails, do not pick wildflowers or plants, do not disturb the wildlife (a great blue heron, guinnea hens, deer, and roosters galore!), no pets, no smoking, no bikes on trails and no fishing. Preservation is paramount here. No trampling of the greenery. ‘The Frog and Fern Ladies’ was the affectionate name for a grassroots citizen action committee that worked diligently to preserve this historic oak savanna and wetlands complex. Due to their efforts, this area was given National Historic Landmark status, and dedicated in 1976. In addition to the preservation of wildlife and flora, so much has been done to archive the history of Dr. John Kennicott’s family. Dr. Kennicott was a medical doctor with a strong interest in horticulture. His son, Robert, was Illinois’ first naturalist and went on to found the Chicago Academy of Science. The Kennicott home (Gothic Revival House) was built in 1856. It is open Sundays from 1-4 pm from February-September. The Tudor-style Redfield Estate (which can be rented for special events) was built in 1929. Annual events at The Grove include: May – Garden and Antique Sale July - Civil War Days Early Oct. – Grove Folk Fest Mid. Oct. – Pumpkin Trail November – Holiday Craft Faire Today, The Grove site is protected and enhanced through an extremely successful partnership of the Glenview Park District and The Grove Heritage Association. Enjoy!
