Geocache Description:

Buddo Rock is a massive lump of sandstone which stands in isolation on the seashore.

Buddo Rock is likely to have once been part of a much larger sandstone shelf, and the softer stone surrounding it would have been eroded away by the sea to leave this huge formation some distance apart from the rest of the cliffs. The eroded surfaces vary from being crinkly in texture, with crazy swirls and obvious layers, to smoother sections and areas with pitted circular holes. A wide range of colours can also be seen in the structure. In addition, there is a natural arch on the east side which gives Buddo Rock its distinctive appearance.

As you approach the rock you may see what looks like a face in profile on the western edge - with a big brow, chunky nose and pale orange lips! Directly behind this profile (at N56 19.522 002 42.478) is a cleft or chasm in the structure which apparently takes you up to the top of the rock. A word of warning though - we tried but didn’t get very far as the ground here is covered in bird poo, and wee man refused to go any further after he stepped on a section where he sank up to his ankles in a great pile of accumulated muck! Cleaning his shoes when we returned home was one of the most disgusting jobs that I have ever had to do! However, if you should wish to continue ascending you should know that it is not meant to be easy to reach the top (hand and footholds further up) and in fact it may actually be quite risky.

Park at the easterly end of the village and then continue along the road to N56 19.168 W002 42.165, where you should see the Fife Coastal Path sign. Following this will lead you down to the rock.

To claim this cache please do both of the following:

(1) Post a photo of yourself and/or GPSr in front of Buddo Rock with the arch clearly showing. If you do not have a camera, then email me with the answer to the following question:
Make your way up the cleft/chasm mentioned earlier until you reach a small “window” in the rock face on the left hand side. On the right hand side rock face almost directly opposite this window a heart has been carved into the stone with the initials AB (not me!) and CW inside it. Approximately two feet directly to the left of this heart is a carving of a hand. What are the three initials inside it?

(2) Please make an estimate of the height and width of the rock. This will help to monitor the current rate of erosion.
