Geocache Description:

There are two places to park, in the NT Car park (££'s) or at the bottom of Latimer Road, St Helens (FREE). Please park at Latimer Road you will then find yourself doing a lovely and unusual walk across the harbour of maybe 0.4 (estimated) mile each way . It is perfect for kids and dogs especially those with adults to supervise. If you park down by the cafe you'll miss out and it will just be an OK 0.1 mile (est) cache and dash but you will have missed out.

PLEASE NOTE MY LOG OF 13TH AUGUST AND THE ONE FOLLOWING ON 28TH AUGUST. THIS CACHE IS TRICKY TO FIND. IF YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL AT FINDING THIS CACHE, PLEASE E-MAIL ME WITH IT'S CURRECT LOCATION, OR REPLACE IN A BETTER SPOT AND LET ME KNOW SO THAT I CAN AMEND THE CLUE.

There is a cafe near the cache, that served unexpectedly good food when we were there, mainly fresh fish dishes as well as standard seaside cafe fare.

Bembridge Harbour has been used since Roman times and as you walk you will be able to spot some of the old harbour walls. Boatbuilding still goes on here, and Hovercraft were built and tested here and I gather are still maintained here. You will see a boatshed that featured on Grand Designs as an awesome house conversion.

As you walk across the bridges, if the tide is low you will see crabs and fish and if you enjoy your birds you will see loads. If you want to do some crabbing (for fun, they aren't big enough to make a meal!), the second bridge is best and chicken skin/bacon or smoked salmon are apparently the best bait.

Hope you enjoy this cache. Please take the time to appreciate the staggering views over the solent as well. This is an excellent dogwalking/dogswimming area too, the best dog swimming spot is just down to the tip of the peninsular, inside the harbour by the green bouy. If paddling is your scene, then there is plenty on the Solent side of the walk and there are rockpools just further around.

You can walk to the Palmerston Fort once a year on the low tide at the full moon in August, it's quite an experience, although there are muggle issues at this time. Take a disposable barbeque and some sausages for afterwards.

Please rehide the cache well and keep a look out for non cachers, they will be around at all times.

UPDATE 15/4/2006 - the cache has been relocated slightly so now should be easier to find.
