Dying Light -The Fish Fluke Lighthouse Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Red Witch: Sadly the lighthouse has died and so has the cache. I made a last trek out across the ocean floor and navigated the massive puddles on the road to view the pile of rubble that is all the remains of the LH. While it existed there was a reason for me to keep a cache here but now there is not. Thanks to everyone that made and enjoyed the journey over the years.
Happy caching!

Geocache Description:

8TH IN A SERIES OF LIGHTHOUSE CACHES.

Its official name is the Grand Harbour lighthouse but locals know it as ‘Fish Fluke’. It is one of 70 authentic towers remaining in NB but this lighthouse has certainly seen better days. It was at one time listed as the most endangered lighthouse in North America but there is no hope left for it now. I visit it each year and expect each time to be my last.

The above was the original narrative for this cache. Sadly, in high winds on Nov 20/2013 the Fish Fluke Lighthouse finally succumbed to the forces of nature and is now only a pile of rubble. With the Digby Pier LH being returned to Nova Scotia in 2012 and the final decay of a private tower, NB is now left with only 70 lighthouses.

This cache is located on Ross Island, Grand Manan and is only available at low tide. Follow Thoroughfare Rd to the end and park. You will see a road of sorts leading across the marine floor. Rubber boots may help if the tide isn’t all the way out. Follow this road until you can see the remains of the lighthouse. You will soon see a grass road to your right, this will take you there. It is a 1.5 mile hike out to the cache from the parking area. The trail is listed in the where to hike on Grand Manan guide.

If you are at all unfamiliar with the Bay of Fundy tides PLEASE check the tide charts before leaving. If you begin about 2 hours before actual low tide you will have no problem. There is a pond on the marsh that has an old blind, great for photography. When I hid the cache there were 6 pairs of Canada Geese with their numerous, very fluffy babies.

EXPLORING THE LIGHTHOUSE. RUBBLE IS NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

The cache is a 1.5 L container with a blue lid containing a log book and some trading items. Please don't leave trackables in this cache as it has few visitors.

PLEASE HIDE THE CACHE AS WELL OR BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT!
