When I lived near Hyde Park, NY
several years ago, I was lucky enough to watch the bones and
enormous tusks of a mastadon as they were excavated from a small
pond in a neighbor's backyard. It was an exciting surprise to
discover the complete skeleton assembled in the museum. Another was
recently discovered in northwest NY, and once again, PRI and
Cornell are involved in the excavation.
